Slippin' and slidin'

Winter brings ice and snow that stays on the ground for weeks at a time in many parts of the country. The ice, snow, and the chemicals used to remove them can be very harmful to your dog’s feet. For that reason alone, you should get your pup some boots to protect his or her paws, if they will be out walking in the winter months. Beyond the protection from chemicals, the dog boots provide some added warmth and protection from moisture.

The brand I have found that works best for my dogs is Muttluks. Although a bit more expensive than some options, they offer great protection in all kinds of weather. The boots have leather bottoms and toe protectors; breathable, waterproof yellow fabric uppers; adjustable Velcro straps and reflective strips if we are out in the dark. At least for my dogs, the soft, sock tops fit their feet and legs better and stays on longer than the boots that are just rubber or neoprene. You can purchase Muttluks from your local pet retailer or online from the company. The company’s website also provides guidance on sizing.

TIP:  My very large and aging Golden Retriever sometimes has great difficulty getting up on slick floors like the tile in our kitchen. The boots provide him with the extra traction necessary to stand up from a lying position without sliding down and has significantly eased my fears that he would hurt himself someday.
