Most Popular Dog Breeds

The results are in from the American Kennel Club’s most popular breed list based on registrations (certificates identifying the dog as the offspring of a known sire and dam, born on a known date). And the winner is … the Labrador Retriever, with more than twice the registrations of the next most popular breed.

How does registration work? When you buy a dog represented as AKC registrable, you receive an AKC Dog Registration Application form filled out by the seller. You complete your portion of the form and submit it with the registration fee. If everything is in order, you will receive an AKC Registration Certificate for your pet. The AKC site provides detailed information on the registration process.

What do we like about the Labrador Retriever? They are good family dogs, intelligent, and easy to train. The Labrador Retriever was originally bred in Newfoundland, to help haul fishing nets ashore. The breed was later refined in England.

Labradors are solidly-built and make excellent family pets or service and rescue dogs. They are energetic and like exercise. They love playing ball with your children or walking with you. Labradors generally get along well with other dogs and pets.

The remainder of the most popular breeds, based on AKC registration includes:

2 Yorkshire Terriers
3 German Shepherd Dogs
4 Retrievers (Golden)
5 Beagles
6 Dachshunds
7 Boxers
8 Poodles
9 Shih Tzu
10 Miniature Schnauzers
