Getting The Recognition Your Dog Deserves

You know your new puppy is beautiful and a wonderful example of his breed. But if you want additional proof, as well as something to fill your trophy case, maybe you should show your dog in competition. The American Kennel Club's (AKC) Beginner’s Guide to Dog Shows tells you what you need to know to get started.

According to the AKC, showing dogs is a sport that combines competition with the joy of seeing beautiful dogs. Dog shows, also called conformation events, are intended to evaluate breeding stock. The size of these events ranges from large all-breed shows, with over 3,000 dogs entered, to small local shows, featuring a specific breed.

Dog shows are one of several types of dog events in which AKC-registered dogs can compete. Other competitions for dogs are companion and performance events. Companion events include obedience, agility, good citizen and tracking tests. Performance events such as hunting and herding, evaluate how well your dog completes the job he was bred to perform.
