Dog DNA Test
Many of us have wonderful dogs that we acquired from a human society, animal shelter, or just found on the street (or they found us). The puppy looks like a bit of this and a bit of that. They are called mutts, mongrels, mixed breed, or Heinz 57 dogs and we love them. But, may be you would like to know more about your dog’s background and genetic heritage.
Now you can. MMI Genomics, Inc., a leader in animal DNA analysis and pedigree certification provides a Canine Heritage® Breed Test. For $65.00 plus shipping and handling, you receive general information, a Data Sheet, a sample submission form, a DNA CheekSwab collection brush, and a pre-paid return mailing label.
MMI Genomics, the Canine Heritage® will use state-of-the-art SNP-based DNA technology to genetically identify breed characteristics of your dog. After you take the DNA sample and mail it for analysis, you will receive a report in 4 to 6 weeks. You can elect to send a digital photo of your pet which will be included on the report’s certificate.
To date MMI has the breed characteristics and genetic markers for 38 breeds including the most common US breeds. You will be told if your pet’s DNA contains a majority of a specific breed, called primary. According to MMI, most mixed breed dogs will not usually have a primary breed unless one or both of their parents are purebred.
Secondary information reports breeds that are easily recognizable within your dog. While these breeds may have a strong influence on your pet, each breed listed makes up less than the majority of your dog’s DNA. And finally, in-the-mix information identifies breeds that have the least amount of influence on your pet’s composition; however, they still appear, at a low and measurable amount, in your pet’s DNA.
