Do You Know Which Common Household Items Can Poison Your Pet?

You would never intentionally hurt your pet or place him at risk. But it is possible that around your home or in your habits are hidden pet poisons. Like what? Foods that have the potential to make your dog sick include chocolate, tea, coffee, certain nuts, onions and potatoes. The consequences of ingesting these substances include seizures, cardiac arrhythmia, and organ damage. Not all dogs are equally sensitive to these foods, but it is better not to try and find out.

In addition to potential poisons in common foods, some household and outdoor plants can harm your pet, if eaten.  The Virtual Vet Poison Control Center provides excellent general information on what is poisonous, why it is poisonous, and what animals may be at greatest risk. The site also provides suggested techniques to induce vomiting to expel the poisonous substance before your see your vet.
