Do Dogs Get Colds?
Dogs may have respiratory problems that are similar to what we call colds. The cause of a human cold is the rhinovirus. It is not believed that the rhinovirus is transmitted to dogs, but animals are susceptible to other viruses found in the viral group to which rhinovirus belongs. Infections and allergies, and other conditions may produce similar symptoms.
The symptoms of a dog cold include runny eyes and nose, loss of appetite, fever, and listlessness. Because dog do not get colds very often and the listed symptoms make signal another condition, checking with your vet is a VERY GOOD idea.
If there is a bacterial component to the illness, antibiotics are a common choice for treating these problems. For cases of viral infection, supportive treatment is usually indicated such as good nutrition and hygiene as well as fluids if need be. In the case of viral diseases, often there is a secondary bacterial component that may be treated with antibiotics. In terms of other dog diseases that can mimic the symptoms of a cold there is:
Parainfluenza is one the most common and most contagious cold-type illnesses in dogs. Kennel cough, frequently caused by the Bordetella bronchiseptica bacteria, is another illness that presents cold-like symptoms in dogs. Canines with kennel cough are most notably affected with a rasping cough that often brings up phlegm. Secondary symptoms include discharge from the nasal passages and eyes. Or, Canine Distemper which is a systemic and highly contagious disease. Dogs are routinely vaccinated against distemper.
In addition to following your vet’s advice and taking the prescriptions, you can make your pet more comfortable as he or she recovers by providing them a warm and dry place to rest with limited time spent outside during cold weather. Provide extra nutrition and his special favorite foods to coax your dog to eat. This will keep his or her strength up and provide immune system support. You can also run a vaporizer near your dog's sleeping area to help keep the bronchial tubes moistened.
